To my colleagues with love

Substitute these words for those in the song:
Those teachers' college days of chalk and talk and boring days are gone.
And in my mind I know the MOE doesn't want them to live on and on
But how do you change something that has taken you from SEA to University
It isn't easy but I'll try.
If you wanted to learn the new literacies, I'd write across your wiki, I'd scrawl
Invites you would see for me to write on your wall,
To my colleagues, with love.

These past few months have hurried by, why did they fly away?
Now it is so, children are growing up to be Web 2.0 people one day.
What takes the place of pen and paper?
It's computers and laptops in class and in the world outside.
What is there for you I can try?

We now live in a world in which technology is changing so fast
The things we learn today by no means will last
TO MY COLLEAGUES WITH LOVE.

  1. Jenny you are so creative I would love to here your rendition. This is so true and I imagine it is even more real to those who have been in the teaching profession for many years. I remember my classroom days as a student when the school recently outfitted a computer lab but students had to pay to do the certificate course. With the major thrust of ICT in the Education Curriculum we have moved from labs to giving students lap tops.

We have certainly moved on from talk and chalk. We are faced with the challenge of delivering the curriculum, preparing students for major exams, maintaining discipline in the classroom and now bringing technology to the classroom in a meaningful way. The teacher's job/role continues to evolve. No longer can we resist this change that is upon us. Thank God for this course, though quite intense, as it shows the possibilities of the technology as regards reading.

I hope our schools will be equipped to facilitate all these changes...that is another issue.

  2. Jenny,

This is a great post.I agree with Trummane, this really makes us reflect on what it was like in the classroom, years ago.Technology is really changing the look of the classroom and if teachers do not want to keep up with the times, they will have a difficult time reaching the students. Also, they will become frustrated with their job.

A high school teacher once told me that she had to engage in the students' discussion about cellphones before they gave her attention. Then she was able to teach her lesson. Therefore, teachers have to use the technology that exists in the school.

We do not want to lose our children.

  3. I really enjoyed your poem. It would also be fun if you can create and E-book with your poem. All the best with the use of technology.
